With an 8-10sp trans, you could run a lower (numerically) final drive, and use the first 6-7 gears for acceleration/ running loaded, and the top gears for highway cruising unloaded.

Even if the truck is underpowered, a 13 speed gives the driver more options than a 10-speed for keeping the engine in the power zone (for climbing hills) and for keeping it in the sweet spot (when cruising on level ground). WebDec 20, 2016 · Personally, I think an 8 speed is the perfect amount of gears for a pickup, 10 seems like a lot of excessive shifting. 8 speed trans would allow for a really deep 1st gear for better take off acceleration, but from what I've seen the top gear in the 6 speed/8 speed/10 speed seem to be very similar ratio wise.

Based on my past experience I don't think a truck with more speeds will be any faster up a hill. Better mpgs would be the main beneficiary IMO.
